Erik Bloodaxe in England
After being exiled from Norway, Erik traveled to the British Isles, where Viking influence was growing stronger by the early 10th century. By this time, the kingdom of Northumbria, located in what is now northern England, was a prime target for Viking conquest. The kingdom had been weakened by internal strife and external pressures, making it vulnerable to Viking raids and eventual settlement.
Erik Bloodaxe’s arrival in Northumbria was significant. He became king of Northumbria in 947 CE after the death of King Olaf, the previous ruler. His rule over Northumbria was marked by bloody campaigns, both against the native Anglo-Saxons and rival Viking factions. Erik’s reign was brutal, characterized by his aggressive attempts to maintain power and his continuous conflicts with other Viking leaders and English forces.
While Erik’s rule was short, it was notorious. His reign in Northumbria saw him alternately engage in battle against other Viking leaders vying for control of the region, as well as against the Anglo-Saxon kings of England. He faced formidable opposition from the kingdom of Wessex, which was rising in prominence under King Edmund I, and he found himself embroiled in several violent conflicts during his time in the British Isles.
Erik's rule in Northumbria did not last long. In 954 CE, after a series of defeats at the hands of the Anglo-Saxon forces, particularly King Eadred of England, Erik was finally forced to flee Northumbria. His downfall was a direct result of the growing power of the Anglo-Saxons and the weakening of Viking influence in England. In the end, Erik was killed in 954 CE, possibly in a battle or through treachery, though the exact circumstances of his death remain uncertain.
Some accounts suggest that Erik was killed by the forces of the Anglo-Saxon king, Eadred, who had successfully united much of England under his rule. Others speculate that Erik may have been betrayed by one of his own men or rival Viking leaders who saw his downfall as inevitable. Regardless of the specifics, Erik’s death marked the end of his brief and violent reign in Northumbria. shutdown123
